Power Electronic and Converters (PECs)

Brief Introduction

Power Electronic and Converters (PECs) group was established in May 2018. This group is developed in order to contribute or expand the knowledge on power electronic area especially on the new structure, new control algorithms, enlarge converters advancement and to create a future on electric generation. The team members are the expert and have contributed since 2003. This group has also been recognized in national and international level, where some members have been invited to deliver a talk, share knowledge and research highlights to postgraduate students and lecturer. Currently, PECs is strongly activated by 6 principal researchers assisted by 18 postgraduate students undertaking Master and PhD degree. Graduated students from this group have been working as lecturer, researcher or continue their study around the world. The group has published more than 100 papers from Scopus to ISI index. Currently, the team covers small converter up to new smart grid applications. The group is currently working on the hybrid AC and DC configurations. The group is divided into smaller research team which are:

Wahyu Mulyo Utomo was born in Pati, Indonesia, in 1969. He received the B. S Degree in electrical engineering from the Universitas Brawijaya Malang, in 1993, the M.S. degree in electrical engineering from the Institute Sepuluh Nopember Surabaya, in 2000, and the Dr. Eng. Degree from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia in 2007. He is currently a Associate Professor with the Department of Electrical Power Engineering, University Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia. His current research interests include the area of power electronics and motor drive control.

Shamsul Aizam Zulkifli (MIEEE 06) was born in Selangor, Malaysia, in 1980. He obtained his B.Eng. (Hons-Electrical and Electronic) and M.S. (Electrical Power Engineering) from University Putra Malaysia, Malaysia, and PhD in Control System Engineering from Loughborough University, UK, in 2003, 2006 and 2012, respectively. He is currently a Associate Professor with the Department of Electrical Power Engineering, University Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia, Malaysia. His current research interests include robust control system on power electronics application, parallel inverter applications and smart grid topology for inverter-grid operation.

Asmarashid Ponniran received the Bachelor of Degree of Electrical Engineering from Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia Malaysia, in 2002, and the Degree of Master of Engineering (Electrical - Power) from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, Malaysia in 2005. Then, he received the Degree of Doctor of Engineering (PhD) in Energy and Environment Science from Nagaoka University of Technology, Japan in 2016. He is currently working as researcher and academician at Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM). His research interests in power electronics area include power converters circuit structure optimization, switching strategies for modular multilevel power converters, high power density achievement of power converters, high voltage gain power converters, and high frequency power converters; these research interests toward renewable energy (RE), electric vehicle (EV), smart grid power system (SGPS) and data centre power system (DCPS) applications.

Jabbar Al-Fattah bin Yahaya graduated from the University of Leeds, U.K. and received his BEng. (Hons) in 2005. During the years 2006 – 2010, he worked as an engineer involves site installation, maintenances, and converter system. He later pursued his MEng. from Universiti Malaya, Malaysia (2010), and completed his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering (2017) from Universiti Tenaga Nasional, Malaysia. He then worked as a Postdoctoral Researcher for a few years before joining Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia as a lecturer. His research interest included Power Electronics, Energy Management Systems, and Renewable Energy System.

Afarulrazi Abu Bakar was born in Johor, Malaysia on May 18, 1980. He received his M.Eng. (Electrical) from Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM) in 2007 and B.Eng. (Electrical) from Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) in 2004. He has been working as a lecturer at the Department of Electrical Power Engineering, Faculty of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, UTHM, since 2007. His research interests are the areas of renewable energy, DC/DC converters, multiple-input converters, multiphase converters, resonant converters, and controller design.

Suhaimi bin Saiman graduated from the Leeds Metropolitan University, U.K. and received his BEng. (Hons) in 1997. From the mid of 1997 to mid of 2002, he worked as an engineer in electrical and electronic company, involving in technical and maintenance reposibilities. Starting mid of 2002, he joining Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia as a lecturer and later pursued his MEng. from Universiti Malaya, Malaysia in the same year (2002), His research interest included Power Electronics and Renewable Energy System.
