High Voltage and Insulation Coordination

KVOLT was established in 2017 as one of the Focus Groups within the Department of Electrical Power Engineering in the Faculty of Electrical & Electronic Engineering, UTHM. As of now, KVOLT consists of 6 academic staffs specializing in the discipline of high voltage engineering. KVOLT boasts with having all the members with PhD in high voltage, as well as having a Professional Engineer (Ir.) registered with BEM and a Chartered Engineer (C.Eng.) registered with the IET. This enables KVOLT to be attached to the high voltage laboratory in the Faculty, and to be the center in transferring academic knowledge and activities, training, education, research activities, as well as consultancies in the field of high voltage engineering. Other than that, KVOLT members also involve with teaching and supervising post-graduate students, and currently there are 12 active research students carrying out high voltage engineering projects. KVOLT specializes in:

  1. High voltage engineering
  2. Testing of dielectric materials and electrical system components
  3. Monitoring the condition of high voltage power system components
  4. Electrical protection and earthing systems
  5. Lightning protection system
 
Members and profile

saufi

M. S. Kamarudin obtained his B.Eng. and M.Eng. degrees in Electrical Engineering (Power) from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) in 2003 and 2005, respectively. He received his Ph.D. in High Voltage Engineering from Cardiff University, UK in 2014. Currently, he is an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Electrical & Electronic Engineering at Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM). He is also a Professional Engineer (Ir.) registered with the Board of Engineers, Malaysia (BEM), as well as a corporate member of the Institution of Engineers, Malaysia (IEM) and currently a member of IEEE. His research interests include gas discharges, high voltage surge arresters, as well as dielectrics and electrical insulation system.

fairouz

Mohd Fairouz Mohd Yousof obtained Dip. Eng, B. Eng and M. Eng from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia. He completed his Ph.D. study in 2015 from The University of Queensland, Australia and currently is a lecturer at the Department of Electrical Power Engineering, Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM). He was a visiting researcher for a year with TNB Research in 2018. His main research is condition-based monitoring and assessment of power transformer and rotating machine. He is actively involved with projects from local and international industries.

norakmal

Nor Akmal Mohd Jamail is a lecturer of Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia since 2008. She received the Bachelor degree in Electrical Engineering from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia in 2005, M.Eng in Power System from Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia in 2007 and Ph.D. in High Voltage Engineering from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, in 2015. Her research interests include condition monitoring of polymer nanocomposite insulation for HV purpose, dielectrics and electrical insulation. She is registered with the Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM).

rahisham

R. Abd-Rahman received M.Eng degree (Electrical & Electronic) and PhD (High Voltage) from Cardiff University, U.K. in 2008 and 2012 respectively. He is currently a Senior Lecturer in the Faculty of Electrical & Electronic Engineering at Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM). His research interests include dielectric materials, outdoor insulator and discharge phenomenon. He is a Chartered Engineer U.K (CEng) and member of engineering institution such as IET (MIET), IEEE (MIEEE) as well as Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM).

nordiana

Nordiana Azlin Othman was born in Johor, Malaysia on January 19, 1986. She is currently a Lecturer at the Department of Electrical Power Engineering, Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia. She received B. Eng. in Electrical Engineering from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) in 2010 and PhD in High Voltage Engineering from UTM in 2016. Her research interest includes the detection and diagnostics of partial discharge and space charge in insulation for condition monitoring.

ramdon

Md Nor Ramdon Bin Baharom was born in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on August 1978. He received the B.E. degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from School of Computing, Creative Technologies & Engineering, Leeds Metropolitan University, United Kingdom in 2004. He received the Ph.D. degree from Electrical Energy and Power Systems Group of the School Of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at the University of Manchester in 2010. He is currently working as a lecturer in Department of Power Electrical Engineering of the Faculty of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM), Malaysia. His major research interests include high-voltage insulations, overhead-line design, lightning structure protection, electrical environmental interference impact, composite insulators and flashover of contaminated insulators.

 High Voltage Laboratory of the Faculty of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia was established in 2010. The laboratory equipped with new and modern high voltage equipment was initially designed for educational purposes for undergraduate and postgraduate students. With the increase demand on postgraduate research studies, the laboratory is now open for research purposes which provides facilities for conducting experiments and testing on insulation system and high voltage related phenomenon.
